Network Upgrades, AI Resources, and Technology Improvements Sprouting Across Campus
Listen to this article
The spring semester is blooming with new technology upgrades. From a stronger, uninterrupted network connection all across campus to an upcoming virtual reality (VR) lab with immersive learning technology, UNLV’s Information Technology (IT) team is bringing revamped technology for every Rebel this semester.
What’s New?
Faster, Stronger Network Connectivity For Everyone
Staying connected to the campus network will soon be more seamless than ever. The network team is nearly complete with upgrading the campus network infrastructure to Juniper’s AI-driven platform, which brings improved connectivity campuswide. The Lied Library, which hosts an average of 5,000 visitors each day, received a complete network redesign, including the installation of 25 new access points. These additional access points provide a smoother WiFi experience for users across the five-story building.
Over 100 campus buildings and outdoor areas have been replaced with Juniper’s cutting-edge technology, which improves network connectivity for more than 60,000 devices connected to the university network each day.
New Location for Laptop Loans
Before tackling homework assignments and reviewing study materials, students should ensure they have all the devices they need for the semester. The Technology Loan Program allows students to borrow a laptop for an entire semester with applications already installed and ready for use.
The Technology Loan Program office has recently moved to John S. Wright Hall (WRI) C211. Students who need to borrow a laptop should submit their request and visit their new location for pickup, if devices are available.
Learning and Teaching With AI
Artificial intelligence (AI) is constantly evolving, and so are the resources available for faculty and staff on campus. The official AI technology webpage displays the latest resources for navigating and applying AI tools in teaching and learning spaces at UNLV. Browse the webpage to find episodes of The Real BS About AI podcast discussing AI detectors and other tools, as well as faculty resources for navigating generative AI in the classroom.
“Expanding AI resources at UNLV doesn’t simply mean handing people new technology. Instead, we’re giving them context, guidance, and practical ways to decide when AI can help improve their work,” explained assistant vice president for digital services and solutions Bob Soulliere. “These resources build literacy and confidence that benefits individuals and strengthens the institution as a whole.”
Tech Tips, Reminders, and Rebel Perks
- Your access to eduroam needs to be renewed after 12 months. Set up or renew eduroam on your device to connect to the fast, secure campus WiFi network.
- If you got a new phone recently, set up Okta Verify on a secondary device before trading in your phone to make sure you can still access your ACE account.
- Download software that suits your academic needs, like Acrobat Pro, Adobe Creative Cloud, and Matlab, at no cost or discounted price. Students can use software outside of campus through RebelApps.
- Check out the WebCampus New Features page for a list of new features or tools that were added or upgraded over winter break. Instructors can book a personalized WebCampus or E-Learning consultation if they’d like help with WebCampus, Zoom, Lecture Capture (Panopto), or Poll Everywhere.
- Start the semester off with the sounds of UNLV IT to focus and stay productive.
What’s Next?
Learning With Virtual Reality
Renovations are underway in the computer lab in Frank and Estella Beam Hall (BEH) 114 to transform the space into a new immersive technology area on campus. The lab will utilize technology similar to that found in the Dreamscape Learn Center within the Lied Library, enabling students to delve one step deeper into their studies through virtual reality.
Easier System for Navigating Financial Aid
MyUNLV is the central hub for academic information, and it's about to get even better. Starting in the fall 2026 semester, the university will transition to a new, enhanced financial aid system designed to provide a more intuitive portal experience. In the meantime, you can continue to access all past financial aid records through the current system.
