Required Windows 11 Upgrades Begin Oct. 13, Get Ready Now!

On October 13, we’ll push required Windows 11 updates to eligible IT-managed Windows 10 computers. This upgrade is required because Windows 10 is being retired this month and will no longer receive security updates.

If you use Windows 10, upgrading is essential to keep your computer safe, and you’ll enjoy Windows 11’s modern look and feel, improved features, and better security.

If Your Computer Uses Windows 10:

  • Backup Data Before October 13: Make sure you have a safe backup of your data. Backup times vary based on your data size.
  • Recommended: Upgrade Now! Your computer will need to restart to finish the upgrade. The restart may take longer than 30 minutes for computers that are older, have low processing power, etc. You can upgrade now, at a time that works best for you, using the Software Center to minimize any disruptions to your work.
  • October 13 Required Upgrade: Any eligible computers still on Windows 10 will receive a prompt to install Windows 11. You can snooze the installation if needed, but it cannot be postponed indefinitely.

Non-IT Managed Computers: Windows computers managed by departments other than UNLV IT will not automatically be updated.

We appreciate your understanding as we protect our campus computing environment. You can learn more about the Windows 11 Transition Initiative on the IT website, and the IT Help Desk is available to assist with any questions or issues you may have.
