LastPass Password Manager Service Changes
Overview
Password managers are one of the best ways to manage and protect strong, unique passwords in one secure, convenient location. In 2023, UNLV offered LastPass Premium and Business accounts at no cost to the campus community to encourage users to adopt this best practice and strengthen online security.
As the use of password managers is more common now, we understand many students and employees may use their own preferred options. After reviewing usage, we found that LastPass was not widely used, so we decided to not renew our contract. As a result, UNLV will no longer offer LastPass as its password manager after July 31, 2025.

What To Expect
Most Users
Students and employees who did not take advantage of UNLV’s LastPass license will not be affected by the service changes. They don’t need to take any action.
University LastPass Users
If you currently have a LastPass account through the university, we’ll send communications to help you prepare for this service change. Review the password manager options available to you.
- Business accounts (university employees): Please book an appointment with IT's LastPass administrators to reset your master password. You’ll keep your passwords, but lose some paid features. If you don’t reset your password, your account will be permanently deleted after July 31.
- Premium and Families accounts: No action is needed. You don’t need to contact the IT Help Desk. With a free account, you’ll keep your passwords, but lose some paid features.
Any shared folders you created will stay in your account but won’t be shared with others. Folders shared with you will no longer be accessible. Before your account converts to a LastPass Free account, we recommend exporting your passwords saved in LastPass as a backup precaution.
If you’d like to keep all the features you’re used to, you can renew your LastPass account (Business, Premium, or Families) on your own before July 31. You’ll be asked to reset your master password with your renewed account. View our FAQs to learn how to sign up for your own LastPass account. Before you renew your account, we recommend exporting your passwords saved in LastPass as a backup precaution.
It's important to keep using a password manager for security and convenience. You can choose the one that works best for you. Before your LastPass account (Business, Premium, or Families) converts to a LastPass Free account, we recommend exporting your passwords saved in LastPass. Some secure alternative password managers you might consider include Bitwarden and 1Password.
