UNLV IT Project Portfolio Management

UNLV IT uses project portfolio management to drive success of approved IT Projects through effective governance, methodologies, and support services.

About

According to PMI, Project Portfolio Management is an approach to achieving strategic goals by selecting, prioritizing, assessing, and managing projects, programs, and other related work based upon their alignment and contribution to UNLV's strategies and objectives. It involves creating a portfolio schedule, taking into account project priorities, resource constraints, supply constraints, financial limitations, and other factors that may impact the success of the portfolio. The goal of project portfolio management is to increase the value of the portfolio by selecting and working on projects that align with UNLV's strategic goals and objectives.

A portfolio is a collection of projects and/or programs and other work that are grouped together to facilitate the effective management of that work to meet strategic business objectives. Portfolio management involves balancing the management skills and resources to achieve optimum strategic, financial, and operational impacts in all life-cycle phases.

Project

A project is a temporary endeavor that is designed to produce a unique product, service, or result. It is a collaborative effort that involves a team of people working together to achieve a specific goal within a defined timeframe and budget. Projects are typically initiated to address a specific need or opportunity and are characterized by their unique nature, complexity, and uncertainty.
