Computer Labs on Campus Have the Technology You Need to Succeed
Need access to a computer? A nice place to study? Somewhere to attend your online class? If your answer is “yes” to any of these questions, our computer labs got you covered. UNLV Information Technology (IT) houses dozens of computer labs scattered all around campus. These labs give our Rebels access to many convenient study areas, plenty of computers to choose from, and many other resources for students to meet their academic needs.
“Students seem to appreciate our student computer labs, where they have everything they need to stay productive,” says Matthew Buk, manager of computer facilities. “From laptop docking stations with large screens and fast, wired internet, to preinstalled academic software that saves them time, it’s the perfect spot to get things done.”
Buk and his team oversee all UNLV IT managed computer labs here on campus, ensuring that the equipment in these labs are ready for students every day of the semester. Since the start of the semester, there have been over 5,000 logins on over 380 student computers. With this, our computer facilities team prioritizes that the labs stay up-to-date with the latest technology to suit each student’s needs.
Large Screens With High-Speed Performance
Brand-new workstations have been added to certain labs, such as TBE A311, with Dell computers equipped with brand-new processors, greater RAM, increased storage, and higher resolution graphics. With this new high performing equipment, workstations inside the lab can easily support just about any software students need to launch.
“In addition to these workstations, we’ve also added several docking stations with curved video conferencing monitors across multiple labs,” says Gregory Shuler, computer facilities supervisor. “These monitors are designed for users with mobile devices, allowing them to easily connect their laptops and take advantage of the large screen monitor, keyboard, mouse, network connection, and built-in video conferencing capabilities that it brings.”
By connecting their mobile devices to these monitors through a usb-c connection, students are able to enhance the technology they are using and complete their work without worrying about their device slowing them down. Additionally, if students have their own headset, these stations include everything they need to attend their online classes.
Special Technology for Future Career Practice
Some computer labs are designed for students who are pursuing their degree in a specific field here at UNLV, with equipment to meet their needs and help them prosper in their desired career paths. Our film lab on campus is one of these, dedicated to students studying film where they can work on audio mixing and synchronization work using the software preinstalled on its computers.
For art students, BHS 131 is equipped with high-end Mac computers for students to complete their academic projects. Each of these computers also have a Wacom tablet by its side that allow students to digitally draw freehand illustrations and create digital manipulations to their art.
New Laptop Stations for Studying
Computer labs are not only great for completing your work, but for studying independently or with friends. Before the semester started, several labs across campus added new laptop stations where students can utilize lab spaces while connected to their own laptop.
Some of these stations can be found in the computer labs inside the Carol C. Harter Classroom Building Complex (CHB) and the Student Union (SU), for students to conveniently study in before or after class. If students were to need extra equipment to complete their work, these stations are also equipped with monitors, keyboards, and charging ports all with a single USB-C connection.
“With locations all over campus, the computer labs are super convenient,” says Buk. “If students haven’t checked them out yet, they are missing out.”
