Faculty Information for Blue Course Evaluations

The Office of Decision Support is working to implement an online course evaluation system. This new system will provide faculty with improved access to student response rates and evaluation reporting. Included in the system is the ability to offer unique questions on a course by course basis. While most of our current users use a standardized template, there are several departments that have program specific questions included in their course evaluations.

Typically course evaluations for the Fall and Spring semesters are conducted during the two weeks prior to Finals Week. Per UNLV policy, evaluations are not conducted during the Final Exam period. During summer sessions, evaluations will open during the last few meeting days of the class. Students must submit their course evaluation before 11:59 PM PST/PDT on the final day of the evaluation period. The system will close at that time, even if the student is in the process of completing their evaluation. Modular, dynamic, or other classes that do not follow the regular academic schedule may have their evaluations scheduled to reflect their meeting dates. Evaluations will not be conducted for classes that have posted grades in MyUNLV. You may share this short video with your students about providing feedback on their evaluations.

Students are able to access their course evaluations with the following methods:

  • Email: When evaluations open, students will receive an email to their UNLV email accounts from unlvevals@unlv.nevada.edu with a link to their course survey. Reminders emailed to students during the evaluation window will also contain this link.
  • MyUNLV: Students may also access their course evaluations through MyUNLV with the following steps:
    • Log into MyUNLV
    • From the Student Homepage select Resources
    • In the menu on the left, select Course Evaluation
    • Be sure pop-up blockers are disabled
    • Select the Course Evaluation link
    • Courses open for evaluation will appear in a new window to be completed
  • WebCampus: After logging into WebCampus, students can select "Course Evaluations" from their WebCampus account profile page. Additionally they can access their open evaluations with links available in the popup message, announcements, and on their calendar. If you have added "Course Evaluations" to your WebCampus course page, students will also be to use this link to access their course evaluations while logged into WebCampus.

To include "Course Evaluations" on your WebCampus course pages:
    • Click on Settings after logging into Webcampus with your ACE credentials
    • Click on the Navigation tab
    • Locate Course Evaluations in the list and click on the 3 dots to the right of it. Select Enable. This will move Course Evaluations to the list at the top and its position can be changed by dragging and dropping Course Evaluations to the desired location
    • Click Save at the bottom of the page

Evaluations do not need to be completed in one sitting. While the evaluation window is open, students may save their responses at any time and return to their evaluation when it is more convenient, but evaluations, even those in progress, will not be accessible once the deadline has passed. Also students may contact the Course Evaluation Team (unlvevals@unlv.nevada.edu) if they would like to edit a submitted evaluation while the evaluation window is open. The student will be responsible for making their changes and resubmitting their evaluation before the deadline. Only submitted responses are included on instructor reports.

Starting in Spring 2024, students have the option to exclude themselves from the course evaluation process. If a student decides to opt out of evaluating a class, they will no longer receive email communications or reminders to complete that particular evaluation.

To opt out, they can click on the "evaluate my courses now" link included in the email notifications from unlvevals@unlv.nevada.edu. If they have more than one open evaluation, a new window will open showing the list of classes with open evaluations. Next to each class will be an "opt out" option.

When there is only one open evaluation, the "evaluate my courses now" link will take students directly to the questionnaire and they will not see the option to opt out of the evaluation. Students with a single open evaluation are welcome to contact the Course Evaluation Team at unlvevals@unlv.nevada.edu for assistance to be opted out of their evaluation.

Please note that opting out of a course evaluation may not be reflected in Canvas until its daily data sync with Blue.

After course evaluations have been for two weeks or longer, the corresponding course content in WebCampus/Canvas will not be accessible until the student completes their evaluation, opts out of their evaluation or the evaluation expires. Only the course content for the evaluation open for longer than two weeks will be affected, and there would be no other impact on accessing other features in WebCampus/Canvas.

If content blocking goes into effect, students will see a pop up message after clicking on the course in WebCampus/Canvas stating that they need to complete the following course evaluation task to proceed. They will regain access to the course content as soon as they complete the course's evaluation. If they decide to opt out of that evaluation, access will return after Canvas and Blue's daily sync.

Faculty should be notified by an email from unlvevals@unlv.nevada.edu when evaluations open for one of their classes, and can access student response rates during the course evaluation process.

There may be an initial drop in response rates given that students will be accessing their course surveys with a new system. Faculty can help their students become familiar with Blue by pointing out this website and the associated videos. You can also visit the Increasing Response Rates page for more ideas.

Students will receive no less than three email notifications from unlvevals@unlv.nevada.edu. The number of reminders will vary according to the length of the evaluation period, but students will always receive at least two reminders after the initial notification during the evaluation period. One reminder will be roughly in the middle of the window and another on the final day the evaluation is open. Reminders are not sent to students who have submitted their course evaluation. Instructors and departments are also encouraged to remind their students during the evaluation period as reminders may be more effective from people familiar to the students.

Evaluation reports will be made available to faculty and departments no sooner than a week following the grade submission deadline for the term. Note that all summer sessions are part of the same evaluation cycle, so reports will be distributed after SU3. Once course evaluation reports have been generated and published, faculty will receive an email notification and will be able to access their current reports. These reports, along with any past reports from evaluations conducted with Blue will be available in both MyUNLV and Blue. Please note that a minimum of 3 evaluations must be submitted by students for a report to be generated for that class. Courses that do not meet this requirement will have "not met" in the Threshold Status column of their report page.

Starting Spring 2021, faculty will also have an export report available in Blue and MyUNLV. This report will provide an unweighted average of all submitted multiple choice evaluation responses. The overall mean listed on individual instructor reports is the average of the course and instructor item averages, which are calculated as the average of each question's responses. Like the individual instructor report, these reports follow the threshold response requirements and responses from cross/dual listed courses are combined.
